WAVES Focus Group in Trakai, Lithuania

On the 28th of June 2026, AY Institute organised a WAVES focus group in Trakai, Lithuania, during the In Rento triathlon event. The discussion involved 7 members of the Zoomies team, who shared their experience as active participants in sports events.

The focus group was based on the WAVES questionnaire and explored how swimming and other sports events could become more sustainable, accessible and better adapted to participants’ needs. Participants discussed topics such as waste reduction, single-use plastics, participant gifts, transport to events, event schedules, energy and water use, and communication around sustainability.

The discussion showed that participants notice environmental impact mainly through unnecessary packaging, disposable items, waste after events and transport challenges. Many supported replacing unnecessary participant gifts with more sustainable alternatives, while also highlighting that some items, such as medals, can have emotional value and should remain optional.

Participants also suggested practical solutions, including better waste sorting, deposit systems for cups or dishes, more accessible public or shared transport options, and clearer communication about sustainable choices.

The insights collected during this focus group will support the WAVES project in developing practical recommendations for more inclusive, participant-friendly and environmentally responsible water sports events in Europe.
